Not all great food has to be complicated or expensiv. Cooking French food is traditionally thought of as precision, fussy, and often pretentious.
The Croque Monsieur breaks the “French food” stigma by being just good food that is easy to make. Croque Monsieur translates literally to Crunchy Mister.
The first time I had a Croque Monsieur was at a cafe at the bottom of the steps to Sacre Coeur (The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris, France).
After climbing the 270 steps, taking I. The view overlooking Paris, and visiting the Basilica we decided to have a meal at a streets side cafe which faced the Basilica. It was a meal to remember; Great company, Great view, simple food and a waiter who told us a Croque Monsieur was small so we would not like to share. The Croque Monsieur was not small. It was easily shareable, but we each bought one upon his recommendation.
It was a memorial meal! Now I make my own at home using my favorite ingredients. Try bringing a little French into your next meal by making a Croque Monsieur.
This is my Americanized take on the Croque Monsieur.
Makes One Sandwich
2 pieces Sourdough Bread
French Style Mustard
3 slices of Cheese (Provolone, Havarti, Monterey Jack)
6 slices of sandwich sliced Ham
Shredded Parmesan Cheese
Butter
Spread mustard on your bread, add ham on each slice, then cheese. (Tip:Never let your cheese touch the mustard or other condiments)
Put the sandwich together and butter the outside. Coat the butter in Parmesan Cheese and sprinkle with fresh ground pepper.
Heat a cast iron pan and place butter. It will take a good amount of butter to keep the cheese from sticking. Melt the butter in the cast iron pan. Cook flipping the sandwich when golden brown. Serve hot.
Most of all enjoy!! Bon Appetite!!!
