A CUT GARDEN; the beginning.

I am excited to try a cut garden this year. I received a notification that a class would be held in my area on creating your own cut garden. Flower farms and floral design using local or wildflowers has been growing in popularity. This trend is interesting to me because I have always lamented over the selection which was available commercially in flowers. I have always preferred what my mother fondly called “weeds”. She used to tell me I was her wildflower in her bed of roses. She had a great love of flowers but could not grow her favorite due to the climate in the Ogden Valley, Utah.

She attempted many times to buy flowers from gardening centers, catalogs, etc. which were noted as growing with in the zone she lived. The winter were harsh, the shorter amounts of daylight do to the mountains surrounding the Ogden Valley on all side, and the growing season short. Thus, Ogden Valley is really what is referred to geographically as a “Hole”. This probably more than others affect the growing of plants. Most did not survive so she worked with what she could grow in her garden. These were mainly wildflowers, bulbs, and flowering shrubs.

“Weeds” are my favorite so a class which focused on creating your own cut garden thrilled me. I was excited by the description and the promise of instructions on creating a 4 ft by 8 ft garden bed. I picked out the spot next to my other garden beds. A couple weeks ago my daughter and me attended a class on cut flower gardening. We attended the class. I was disappointed in the fact that we learned very little to help us create the garden. However, the class sparked my creativity. I was going to take the knowledge my mother and time had given me about gardening and floral design. I was going to create my own garden. I have created a garden. The “Cut Garden” page will focus on this garden. It will be a live page. You will know what I have done right, wrong, and the adjustments I have made on the way. This is in no way meant to be a tutorial to show you how to do your garden. This is to be an inspiration or voyeur page.

If you do have ideas, experiences, or join in on creating your own cut garden please send them to my email. I will review them and possibly share, of course giving you the credit for the submission.

I truly believe that life is all about learning from your failures and triumphs. I learn from everyone around me and the only way I grow is by taking failures and trying to do better. Also, by taking my triumphs and repeating. This is a page about the reality of gardening.
