Buttermilk Pioneer Biscuits

These fluffy and flaky biscuits will disappear faster than you can cook them. Biscuits are a fast easy addition to any meal. Use them in combination with sausage and gravy or BBQ they are always a hit.

Buttermilk Pioneer Biscuits


2 ½ Cups all-purpose flour

1 Teaspoon Sugar

1 Tablespoon Baking Powder

½ Teaspoon Salt

½ Cup Butter Flavored Crisco

¾ Cup Buttermilk or Milk with 1 cap of Apple Cider Vinegar. Let sit for 5 minutes before using.

1 Egg, beaten


In a bowl place flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and Crisco. Cut Crisco into flour mixture using a pastry blender. Once the Crisco is in pea size pieces create a well in the middle. Pour buttermilk and egg into the well and mix until creates a loose ball. Do not use mixture or overwork.


Roll on a lightly floured counter into a rectangle. Score into 3 even pieces. Fold on top of each other. Roll out again. Cut into 8 squares. Place in a cast iron skillet leaving an inch gap between biscuits. Place pieces of cold butter between biscuits. Place in a preheated oven.


Bake 450° for 10 to 12 minutes.
