Day tripping; Smithfield, Utah

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

Smithfield is a suburb of Logan. To get to Smithfield you go up Sardine Canyon and on the mai highway in you turn left instead continuing on into Logan. I love Logan, but most of the items I want to do require the pandemic to be completed and business returned to normal.

**As a side notes this trip was prior to the Governor giving an out of county travel ban and request to stay home.**

We went to Smithfield to pick up railroad ties to put in the ground to hold gravel from our RV pad away from the grass. Railroad ties make a great barrier and this was the best place to get them.

On our way up we passed Mantua Reservoir which has just lost its ice. We would love to try fishing it in the future. We also went through the dry lake area which is not so dry right now. The dry lake fills with run off during the spring and high water years but by fall it is usually dry. It is flooded farm land and I often wonder how the farmers deal with the unpredictability of Spring. Some years it is flooded other years not.

On the way in we saw the American West Heritage Center. This is a living museum ran by USU. They have old farm machinery they use to farm and most springs it is a real busy place with baby animal days. We will be back.

During social distancing we stayed in our vehicle and looked at the spring. The beauty of the farmlands turning green and the snow beyond still in the mountain.

Other than the landscape yard we visited the only other business we visited was the Gossner Cheese Factory. It is In Smithfield. The factory produces high quality cheese and dairy products which are shipped throughout the western United States.

The side of the building above the store entrance has an old Swiss proverb, “ You good faithful farmers, how are you valued by your country? If God does not bless and the farmer does not work, I ask, who has something to eat? I thought this very apropos. Look below for the picture.

When we stop we always buy “squeaky cheese”, self stable flavored milk, economy Swiss, Muenster, and other cheese as it strikes our fancy.

Squeaky cheese is new cheese which has been cut into curd and the whey has been drained. It has not been aged or compressed into loaves or rounds. It has a different taste and texture than aged cheese. It has has a firm texture and as you eat it, the curds squeak and are chewy. It is unique and due to it being un aged you usually find it only at the cheese factories. Gossner also makes flavored self stable milk along with self stable milk. My son loves the milk boxes and his favorite flavor is Root Beer Milk. It tastes like the bottom of a root beer float where the ice cream has melted into the root beer. They best part is that they do not need to be refrigerated until just prior to drinking. It saves refrig space. He also loves their chocolate milk. They also have orange cream, banana, vanilla, cookies and cream, strawberry, 2% milk, 1% milk, whole milk, and whipping cream.

After purchasing our items we headed home to do some yard work.
