Creating more storage in a M.U.D. Room; Multiple Ubiquitous Duds Room?

Updated: Jan 3, 2020

Our entry area from the garage has an area with cupboards on one side and a bench on the other side. You would think with ample cupboard space assigned to each person it would be a neat orderly space. NOPE!! The space tends to be a catch all with the bench covered with coats, bags, gloves, snowboard boots, you name it and it has probably been on the bench. We are also fighting over the only 4 hooks in the area to hang items from, even though I have asked that the hooks be left for wet items to dry. After dried please move the items. This process is not working so the Multiple Ubiquitous Dudes space is getting an upgrade.

Above the bench we are going to install more hooks to help catch the jackets and other clothing items normally left on the bench. I will also be creating a bench cushion, but that will be a follow up post.

When adding anything permanently or even as temporary furnishings you need to look around and blend it with the existing design. This is true as long as you aren’t renovating. Renovations of course are meant to break from the old and update or refresh an older style. In the case of our mud room we are adding and not renovating. We want to make it look like the detail and design were completed when the house was finished. We want to make a seamless design. To do this we looked through the house looking at existing detail in doors, closets, cupboards to see what made sense.

Here are some ideas:

Corrugated tin roofing, picture framed in using wood with coat hooks and basket bins.

Bead board panel, picture frame in using wood and multiple panel detail with open shelf on top painted all white.

Multiple panel detail with reclaimed lumber inserts.

Multiple panel detail with hooks and no shelves or basket bin.

Floor to ceiling decorative paneling with two tiers of hooks for additional height and storage.

Pre-fabricated hook boards purchased from home improvement store placed in a line across the wall. Hooks are already installed on wood and are ready to install using a few screw.

We chose to do idea number 4 - Multiple panel detail with hooks and no shelves or basket bin. This works for us. We don’t need storage because we already have floor to ceiling cupboards in the space. We need hooks for easy organization and hanging of outerwear.

We took cues from existing detail in the house using the same casing materials found in our house around the doors to create the decorative detail. We even matched the 1/2 inch overhang. The ultimate goal was to make it look like it was created as part of the building of the house.

When you start a functional or decorative project in your house blending it into existing features should always be you goal unless this project is the start of a full scale renovation.
