Keep the rust away; Easy tips for cleaning cast iron cookware

Cast Iron is easy to care for and clean if you know a few simple tricks.

1. Clean you new cookware using hot water and soap. Dry throughly. Rub with a small amount of vegetable oil.


2. Store in a dry area.


3. Do not put a cold cast iron on a hot surface or fire. It is best to slowly heat or start with warm cookware. When using cast iron in oven preheat cast iron along with the oven.


4. Wipe Out With a paper towel immediately after use.


5. Use Aluminum liners or hand line for sticky recipes like cobblers.


6. No matter how hard you try you will get stuck on food. When hot add a Pint of hot water or enough to cover the food and let sit 10 - 15 minute. If cold add water and bring to a boil. Turn off and let sit for 10 - 15 minutes. Dump out and wipe with paper towel until clean. Then wipe down with a thin layer of vegetable oil.


7. If this doesn’t work pull out a simple abrasive which will not damage your cast iron or its protective seasoning layer. What is this simple abrasive everyone already has Salt. Place 1 teaspoon of salt and rub with a paper towel. Dump the when clean. Rinse throughly, dry, and oil.


8. You will rarely need to use soap and water to clean your cast iron. It is recommended that you only use it when first cleaning the shipping and storage oils. Why because cast iron can hold onto flavors and the last thing you want is for your dinner to taste like soap.


9. Do not use and harsh abrasives like steel wool on you cast iron unless you plan on re-seasoning it.


10. Lastly if your cast iron does rust they can be taken back to bare metal by sanding or using steel wool and re-seasoned. Cast Iron can out live you and can be passed down if taken care of properly.
