Milk substitutes for when you are in a pinch

So as COVID 19 has hit the United States and Utah people are panicking. The grocery stores have been raided, so why we wait for the shelves to be restocked because of hoarding what can we do.

1. Look in your pantry for Evaporated Milk.

It is canned milk which has had 1/2 of its water removed. You can take 1 can of milk and add 1 can of water.

This will create whole milk. I prefer to add one can of milk to 1 1/2 cans of water to 2 cans. The taste and texture is closer to 2% milk which we usually drink. This will create milk for cereal or drinking.

2. If cooking then how about taking sour cream in a 1 to 3 ratio. To substitute 1 cup you would do 1/4 cup Sour Cream to 3/4 cup Water. I do not suggest drinking it due to the sour flavor unless you like Buttermilk.

This is a great substitute for Buttermilk.

If you are looking to cut the fat by removing cream then do a 1/2 cup sour cream to 1/2 cup water.

3. Another great substitute is yogurt. It works best with cooking not drinking. 1 to 3 ratio again. To substitute 1 cup you would do 1/4 cup Yogurt to 3/4 cup Water. Plain yogurt works in any recipe if you have flavorEd yogurt then you need to reduce the sugar in your recipe

If you are looking to cut the fat by removing cream then do a 1/2 cup yogurt to 1/2 cup water.

4. is another canned milk product, Sweetened and Condensed Milk. It can be mixed in a 1 to 3 ratio. It will be super sweet so reduce the sugar in your recipe.

Sweetened and Condensed milk is best used to make creamer in a pinch.

Use the substitute which works best for your circumstance.

This to shall pass but instead of being upset at everyone panicking let embrace trying something new. Look for new ways to create your recipes.
