Picking a ripe watermelon

I brought home a watermelon today and my teenage son asked curiously "How do you pick a good watermelon?" As we discussed what I have learned from others to help me pick a ripe and flavorful watermelon I thought I would share with you a couple tips I have picked up which help me pick a good watermelon every time.

1. It should be firm to the touch.

2. It should be a deep green color.

3. Look for a yellow on the belly. This means it ripened on the vine. Most farmers don't take the time to rotate their watermelons daily to keep the yellow spot from occurring as it ripens. It is just an area that never saw the light of day.

4. Look for bee stings. This is where a bee has pierced the skin looking for a sweet treat. If a watermelon has several lines of bee sings that have healed then it will be sweet.

5. Thump! It does work. Listen for a hollow sound.

Best of luck. Try these tricks or send your own tricks to me and I will add them on this blog.
