Make your own Quilting Frame; Free instructions

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

When I was young, my mom would borrow my grandmother’s quilting frame. I remember both of them using it to make quilts. I used it many times to make quilts, but as I moved on to my own family most of my quilts have been laid out on a table or floor because I did not have a frame or room for on. I am excited to announce that me and my husband created a quilting frame today.

It was created by using

4 (2x4)

56 (2 1/2 wood screws)

8 Framing nails

2 (1x4x8)

2 (1x4x6)

2 (1x4x4)

4 clamps

Cut the 2x4s into the following lengths

4 (30 inches long)

16 (9 1/2 inches long)

8 (1 1/2 inches long)

Start by putting the 30 inch 2x4 and the 4 (9 1/2 inch 2x4) place in a star pattern. Nail to the 4 inch sides first, then pre-drill and screw the legs. Add the 1 1/2 pieces to the top using 2 screws To creat the stirrup.

Repeat until you have 4. The legs are complete. The 1x4 rests in the top of the leg. Cut them to the sizes you will need. I have (4) 1x4x8, (2) 1x4x6, and (2) 1x4x4.

8 feet will allow you to do up to 92 inch wide or long quilts

6 feet will allow you to do to 70 inches wide - lap quilts and twin size

4 feet will allow you to do 45 inches wide -baby quilts typically.

To place the quilt on frame you first put the two board you choose for length into the frame stirrups. These will stay static and not move. Add the bottom fabric of your quilt to the frame. Start on one side of the frame placing the length side of the quilt on the length board you put in the stirrups. Using quilting tacks you tack the fabric at least 1-2 inches overlapping the board and tack every 6 to 4 inches along the boards. Stretch the legs so the blanket is loosely stretched.

You next lay the width boards on top of you length boards. Tack the top of the same way.

Stretch tight and place clamp on each corner.

Add batting then the top. Tack the top every 4 -3 inches between the bottom tacks following the same process.

You are ready to quilt.
