I took three teenagers shopping with me. I had two young men for muscle and my daughter to help me find flowers. I knew that I wanted:
1 Anchor plant, a bush but they kind of bush I was undecided.
3/4 of my plants to be perennials including
Bulbs 2 tulips (black beauty) to replace my ones a dog ate.
A daisy because they are simply beautiful.
Dahlia tuber because it is my daughters favorite flower.
Along with a mix of colored greenery (purple foliage along with variegation).
Lavender for a wonderful smell and to dry for projects.
1/4 of my plants to be annuals such as
Pansies and petunias for instant color. Pansies are is frost resistant. They can survive or reseed themselves. They give a big impact for a small price.
Palm grass for fillers in bouquets.
Most of all enjoy yourself and know that you can pick what you want, what has meaning, or what you can afford.
My cut garden bed project took one day and $400 in total wood, soil, and plants. It was more expensive because I picked so many perennials.
To to reduce the cost of a garden. Pick up discounted bulbs in the fall. Drive through your neighborhood or other neighborhoods in the spring look for houses with extensive gardens. These gardeners in the spring separate their plants and bulbs. They often put plants on the curb for free. I got my Iris tubers and Black-eyed Susan this way. Plant seeds from seed packets. Plant a majority of annuals and shop the discounted perennial sales in the fall. Shop your local botanical garden plant sales. They will also separate their plants in the spring and sale the plants to help with their bills and to reduce the cost of visiting their gardens.
Gardens are not instantly beautiful and full. It takes time to build a mature garden. I enjoy seeing the changes that occur daily.
