The best part of Thanksgiving is the leftovers. Figuring the size of turkey or other meat main dish can be confusing. The old turkey calculator will tell you to calculate 1.25 pounds of meat per person.
This means that a 20 pound turkey will serve 15 people. 2 kids under 10 = 1 adult or 1 adult is factored into this 15 people calculation.
Using New Turkey Math we account for the fact that not all of a turkey is edible and most important we want leftover. We need enough to send home some with guests and also keep some for ourselves.
Thr best part of Thanksgiving is that the next day we have leftovers to make turkey sandwiches or turkey noodle soup or turkey tetrazzini.
The calculation with new math is 2 pounds per adult or 1 pound per kid. I have 10 adults coming for Thanksgiving. The equation works out like this 10 X 2 = 20.
I will want a 20 pound turkey.
Another example is 5 adults and 7 kids.
5 X 2 +7= 17 pound turkey.
As a side note for red meats meats like prime rib and ham calculate 1.5 pounds per adults if you want leftovers and 1 pound if you want little to no leftovers. Boneless ham is .5 pounds person no leftovers. For extra boneless ham purchase 1 pound per person.
